As the title of Monotonix’s debut full-length suggests, this band is all about being there and living to tell the tale. Surely everyone not hiding under a rock since 2008 has heard of this Tel Aviv–based trio’s live antics — which almost always include the entire band spending the better part of gigs crowd-surfing while playing their instruments (even drums!) and occasionally taking the show out of the venue and onto the streets. Surprisingly, Monotonix’s music holds up even without uncomfortably close proximity to hirsute frontman Ami Shalev’s ball-sweat. Where Were You maintains the group’s riotous energy, especially on frantic freak-outs like “Spit it on your Face” and opener “Flesh and Blood.” The slower, darker moments are equally effective as Shalev proves himself as much a singer as a showman. Throwing garbage cans around the apartment while listening to this record is still an option, but it’s not necessary.
