Editorial Rating:

Maturing like a fine wine made from the “small town sour grapes” mentioned in “Toronto Enough Tonight,” The Parkas' sophomore album sees the band mixing their dust-up delivery with an air of concession. Drummer/lyricist Greg Rhyno continues to chisel off clever new chunks of Canadiana in the pensive, Surfacing-inspired “Margaret Atwood” while perpetuating The Parkas mythology with self-referential nuggets. The stomp-along energy of “You Get What You Pay For” and the ingenious Marxploitation of “Lenin & McCarthy” is balanced by the well-paced buildup of opening track “Filthy Rich Kids.” Though The Parkas have yet to truly capture their live energy, Put Your Head in the Lion's Mouth is lined with pointed insights, surprising textures and danceable fight songs.
