ROMAN PILATES: HH

BY Chris Bilton   January 02, 2008 15:01

ROMAN PILATES PLAYS NOT MY DOG (1510 QUEEN W) JAN 8.

Disguises leader and Wintage label head Kevin Crump’s solo project is the kind of sonic abuse fit to appear in Thurston Moore’s Bull Tongue column for Arthur magazine. HH finds Crump killing sound with the patience of someone who crafts songs out of tectonic vibrations, rather than relying on melody or form. He’s a fixture on the noise scene — it sounds as though he was allowed to bring a jet turbine into Mitzi’s Sister for the live recording of “Train to Hades.” Standout track “Freezerburn” is a focused stream of blast-furnace feedback, but with the organic hump and sway of a dinosaur’s feeding frenzy. The primitive tape edits add to HH’s piercing charm, and the whole thing maintains a ragged white noise arc that’s surprisingly hypnotic, even as you can feel the migraine creeping up your spine.
