1. He’s internet-famous. “I Want Those Flashing Lights,” an indie-rock scorcher based on Kanye’s Graduation track, exploded after the video (featuring the comely, hoodie-clad crooner getting shoved in Yonge-Dundas Square) received props on Mr. West’s blog.
“For a new artist, that’s more effective than a billboard in Times Square,” reflects Munroe, “but I didn’t expect its boulder-down-the-hill momentum.”
Just how popular was it? “At its height, it was the most-viewed viral video across the internet, second only to ‘Bird Poops Into Mouth.’”
2. He’s like Eminem with a yen for Paul McCartney. The 26-year-old Munroe’s no stranger to hip-hop, producing beats for Chauncey Black, Saukrates and Moka Only. Strangely, his debut Don’t Think Less of Me (due this summer) is filled with accessible pop neurosis — more Jon Brion than Jay-Z.
“I’ve always been fascinated with the black music from the ‘70s. My three influences are The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and J Dilla.
“I’m no hip-hop head, but five years ago [my label] took a chance on me even though I didn’t have anything (yet) to bring to the table. People always forget that when Eminem first came out, no one understood what he was doing.”
3. He’s one of those home-schooled freaks. Born in North Gower, Ontario, Munroe was home-schooled until Grade 9, then was accepted to the prestigious Canterbury arts school which he attended alongside Arcade Fire bassist Tim Kingsbury.
“I was so weirded out by homework and schedules, I couldn’t eat for a month…. While I was never that popular, it was so valuable to mix with different groups. That’s where I realized that music is what I’m meant to do.”
4. He craves structure. Munroe harbours a secret desire to enlist in the military and once played bagpipes in a marching band that escorted the Queen to Parliament Hill.
“The idea of traipsing around the world and jumping out of airplanes really appeals to me,” gushes Munroe. “Life and death constantly hangs in the balance … though, I think I’ll stick around for a while.”
