Miller would not be strong

BY   March 12, 2008 14:03

Re “A strong democracy system,” Editorial Digest, Feb. 28: The terrible ideas supported by Mayor Miller in the past — selling of prime waterfront property is a key one for me — suggest that he would waste this opportunity and help Toronto continue its decline into the bland face of typical North American cities. Convert Yonge Street south of Wellesley to a pedestrian boulevard with trees and patios to rival Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Expropriate the entire waterfront, rip everything down and place parks and pathways. Ban cars south of Front, west of Parliament, east of Spadina. Stop new condo development. Raise property taxes for rich neighbourhoods. Fine people for not clearing snow. All easy things to do. But he’d rather set up committees to discuss whether street vendors can sell falafel rather than address the big issue — the rapid decline of our city.

Ads butt in
It’s a shame that the thoughtful and well-written story by Melinda Mattos on International Women’s Day (“Still Marching,” City, March 6) was printed facing a full-page ad for Aria cigarettes. Setting aside the fact that this pink and slim brand is clearly being marketed to women (and girls), the very decision of EYE WEEKLY’s publishers to accept ad revenue from an industry directly responsible for 16,000 deaths in Ontario every year destroys your credibility. Adorable omission
I really enjoyed the article on Woodhands (“Two much,” Cover, March 6), as they are a great band and very moving to see live. I am confused by some of the choices in your article though. You mention that Werb met Banwatt at the Henri Fabergé and the Adorables album release party at the Palais Royale. However, nowhere does it mention that Dan Werb also currently plays organ/keyboards in Henri Fabergé and the Adorables, and has done so since before the mentioned album release. This fact not only displays Werb’s diversity as a musician and performer, but is yet another example of how it seems that Henri and his band are sort of a sprouting ground for numerous interesting up-and-coming performers. Pocketbook journalism
At some point in the past few months, you’ve stopped reviewing restaurants that I could reasonably afford on a regular basis. Come on, guys! More cheap and cheerful restaurants, please — those are the ones that people go to the most! BRYAN (SUBMITTED ONLINE)

Correction
In our March 6 issue, we mistakenly printed that Ron Sexsmith will be performing at the This Is Not A Reading Series launch for Claudia Dey’s novel Stunt. His performance has not been confirmed. EYE WEEKLY regrets the error.
