Toronto’s dirty mountain ranges

BY Shawn Micallef   March 12, 2008 14:03

Toronto’s near-record-breaking level of snowfall this year has the City of Toronto physically removing it, breaking from the usual practice of letting the snow melt. Nearly 2,000 people and 600 dump trucks are moving the snow to sites around the city. Stand on the north side of the Bloor Viaduct to catch a glimpse of the Don Valley snow heap or head down to Unwin Avenue near Cherry Beach to see another. These dirty mountains may not melt away until mid-summer and though impressive, they contain toxic amounts of salt as well as oil, grease and whatever else was scraped off Toronto roads.
