Noble tiles The type and tile work along the Bloor-Danforth line are testament to the efficient and subtle modernist values Toronto embraced in the mid-1960s. Though not as dramatic as New City Hall or the TD Centre, the patterns are as familiar to us as our living room wallpaper and evoke the era well. Using a font unique to the TTC, the tile combinations repeat every few stations and are paired with alternating coloured borders along the top. Unloved by the TTC, the tiles are dirty and neglected, allowing commissioners to vote last week to allow their destruction and renovation. If they were simply cleaned and fixed, as they should have been all along, they could be easily incorporated into beautifully updated stations.
