MAURICE FULTON
@ SEVENTH HEAVEN meets BANG THE PARTY
With DJs Jaime Sin, Andycapp, Will Munro, Rod Skimmins. Thu, Apr 3. Levack Block, 88 Ossington (back room). $8 before midnight.
Although he’s not mentioned as often as other electronic music innovators, Maurice Fulton is an astonishingly original producer with a maddening number of musical aliases: he’s produced left-field techno under his own name; made complex, jazz-informed work as Boof; smoothed out some of his rougher edges as Ladyvipb, and was the production force behind his wife Mu’s weird and wonderful album Out of Breach. Fulton also leads the pack of disco revivalists, particularly with his retro-futurist recordings as Syclops. After teasing us with a handful of EPs since 2001, he’ll soon unleash I’ve Got My Eye On You, a Syclops album of abstract analog goodness, on DFA Records. This intimate DJ appearance has been a long time coming.
THE CHAMELEON PROJECT
@ IF IT TAKES ALL NIGHT CD RELEASE
With kNeptune (live), DJs Jamie Kidd, Rollin’ Cash, visuals by Siren. Fri, Apr 4. Revival, 783 College. $12 advance tickets at Soundscapes, Rotate This, Play De Record, Shanti Baba, Ticketweb.ca, Nufunk.ca.
Toronto trio The Chameleon Project are on a roll. Having played gigs and festivals across North America and recently opened shows for both The New Deal and The Charlie Hunter Trio, the band have found ever-growing audiences for their live blend of dub, jazz, funk and electronics. Expect even bigger and broader things as they release their second full-length CD, If It Takes All Night, with this celebration featuring support from a number of friends, including original bassist Jamie Kidd.
METALOGIC @ PLATFORM
With DJs Joel Mull, Jamie Kidd vs Terence Kissner, Greg Gow. Sat, Apr 5. Footwork, 425 Adelaide W. $20 before 1am.
Speaking of Kidd, he also gets down in two contexts while opening for one of his “biggest influences in techno,” Sweden’s fantastically deep and musical Joel Mull who returns to T.O. for the first time in seven years. Kidd spins an early-evening tag-team set with Terence Kissner and later performs a live PA of originals alongside Frederik Hatsav. As Metalogic, Kidd and Hatsav create edgy, driving and highly rhythmic techno. Expect them to come extra-banging as they highlight tracks from Metalogic’s new Boxed & Warped EP, out this month on Brooklyn’s Hidden Agenda label.
DJ CONTRA
With DJ Huggs. Sat, Apr 5. Wrongbar, 1279 Queen W. $10.
Fresh from playing dates together in Miami and NYC, and currently in the middle of a dozen shared gigs across Canada, Miami’s DJ Contra and Montreal’s DJ Huggs prepare to funk up Wrongbar. Contra is a deft mixer with wide-ranging musical tastes and a career that has included hosting a soul, funk and hip-hop radio show in DC, touring as M.I.A.’s DJ, and now manning the decks for Santogold. Check his OneMoreDay blog for some great mixes and tidbits of info.
DJ SEGA @ SQUARES STAY HOME
With Rye Rye, Dirty 30, Jokers of The Scene. Sat, Apr 5. Blak, 178 Bathurst. $10 before 11pm.
This week’s requisite mention of Diplo comes as I tip you off to Robert “DJ Sega” Taylor Jr., a just-turned-21-year-old from Philly. Diplo and his Mad Decent crew came across Taylor as he was throwing down his own productions and remixes at Jamz roller-rink where his Friday residency is apparently a huge all-ages affair. Some of Sega’s Philly party jam originals and Baltimore club remixes can be found on Hollertronix’s new #8 EP. Also repping on the Baltimore club front here is teenage MC Rye Rye, who makes it to T.O. after missing a March appearance due to a flight cancellation.
