Beginning in the 1950s with the opening of the Yonge subway line, the TTC initiated a “streetcar abandonment policy” similar to many other North American cities. Though Toronto discontinued the policy before all the city’s beloved lines were removed, traces of the old tracks can be seen poking up through the pavement at Bay and Bloor, Mt. Pleasant and St. Clair and, if you look closely, along some parts of Lansdowne Avenue. On other streets, like Dupont, the tracks are buried much deeper but can often be glimpsed during road construction.
