ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

Some bands release EPs as stop-gaps; for these chaos-bringers, the act seems to be a primal necessity. Three of these four tracks are leftovers from last year’s Strawberry Jam sessions, and whether adhering to that album’s copious reverb or diverging with quieter, near-muted singing, the group uphold their central philosophy — bouncing disparate noises off each other. “Water Curses” sounds like three or four pop songs stacked together, a cascade of bubbly samples and catchy vocal hooks. What remains is less giddy. “Cobwebs” doesn’t have the rhythm of a “Peacebone” but its sea-shanty percussion and lovely refrains slosh around your head regardless. Unfortunately, by the end the band abandons clamour entirely for repetitive noodling and underwater ambiance. You might say they’re paddling in the Ganges stoned. You could also say they’re treading water.
