Holy crap, Batmyn

Seriously? Robyn? That’s who you decide to put on the cover of your magazine (May 1)? I know that profiling mainstream entertainment and celebrities helps you boost your circulation and sell more ads, but come on. It’s bad enough that a significant part of your cover story is a repurposed excerpt from a 10-year-old article, in case we’ve forgotten why we didn’t care about Robyn back then.
Would it really be that terrible to profile more Canadian, or (god forbid) local artists on your covers? I can think of dozens of Toronto musicians, activists, performers and comedians who would make for far more compelling reading than the latest warmed-over commercial product to blow through Toronto.

Oh, and just because Perez Hilton listens to Robyn does not make her news. That’s twice you name-dropped that over-hyped, vacuous, media-ghoul in this week’s magazine alone. IAN MACINTYRE

I think I got cavities last week from all the “sugary” references to Robyn’s vocal chords. I wish the overhyped praise for her cheesy Euroclub sound would vanish like she did in 1998. Swedish pop singers please note: do not attempt an American comeback if you haven’t even changed your hairstyle in 10 years.

Re “Striking our fuse,” Editorial Digest, May 1: It’s a myth that, as you write, “generally, arbitrated contract settlements often wind up favouring workers and costing more.” It all depends on whether those who control the purse strings value the work that you do.

In Toronto, the police and firefighters have done well without the ability to strike while hospital support staff and nursing home workers have not.

It remains to be seen how well TTC workers would fare if declared “essential.” TED TURNER
