SEK ONE @ ACID CITY
With DJs Fistfight, Alias. Fri, June 20. Toika, 471 Richmond W. $6.
“Anything I do is based solely around a big fat bassline,” declares local DJ and promoter Brandon Sek (a.k.a. Sek One), the man behind the Curb Crawlers and Subtrac events. Having been DJing for the past 14 years, Sek has loved and played all from Chicago house and Detroit techno to drum ‘n’ bass, UK garage, dubstep and “dark Detroit drum machine electro.” Acid City finds him partnered with similarly adventurous DJ/producer Fistfight, of Nacho Lovers fame. Expect the two of them to come heavy with sounds both classic and futuristic. Check Sek’s popular blog at www.thecurbcrawlers.com/blog for a taste.

TOM WRECKS @ BOOM
With DJ Pho, host Alanna. Friday, June 20. Teranga African Restaurant, 159 Augusta. $5.
Speaking of putting bass in your face, rising monthly event Boom features resident DJs Tom Wrecks (Stylusts) and Pho (Bonjay) blending dancehall reggae, “street hop” and dance music ranging from soca house to R&B, Baltimore club and beyond. Ottawa native Wrecks has best been known by his turntablist tag T-Wrecks and got his start with the Stylusts crew, but he’s since branched out like mad, producing and playing fresh fusions of hip-hop, calypso and mucho booty business. PS: word is that co-resident Pho will also be dropping new Bonjay dubplates. Summer goes Boom!

TITTSWORTH
With DJs Dave Nada, Nasty Nav, Dougie Boom. Fri, June 20. Wrongbar, 1279 Queen W. $10 before 11pm.
D.C.-based DJ, remixer and producer Tittsworth has played in T.O. so many times over the past few years we could almost consider him an honorary local. People get rowdy to his partyrific blends of Baltimore club, hip-hop, electro and rock, and you can expect an extra-amped set here as Tittsworth tag-teams with frequent DJ partner Dave Nada. Tittsworth is also putting finishing touches on 12 Steps — an artist album featuring guest appearances from the likes of Kid Sister, Pase, Stimulus and DJ Assault — due out next month on New York’s Plant Music.

MAT THE ALIEN @ MAKE IT FUNKY
With Fort Knox Five. Sat, June 21. Revival, 783 College. $15 advance tickets at Rotate This, Play De Record, Shanti Baba, Soundscapes, Slinky Music,
Ticketweb.ca, Nufunk.ca.
BC meets DC as Make It Funky favourite Fort Knox Five steps to the decks for a head-to-head contest with Whistler’s Mat the Alien. Mr. Alien, a transplanted Brit who left his home near Manchester for the snowboarding opportunities of BC’s mountains in the mid ‘90s, has been spinning solidly for the past decade. He’s come to be known as a technically-gifted turntablist who cuts and scratches through funk, hip-hop, breaks, drum ‘n’ bass and more, and has numerous mix CDs and downloadable online mixes to present as evidence.

DJ DAN & DONALD GLAUDE @ SPIN SATURDAYS
With Jelo, Mark Oliver, Manzone & Strong, DJ Wristpect, 4 Korners, MC Sir Lancelot. Sat, June 21. The Guvernment, 132 Queens Quay E. Cover TBA.
DJ Dan and Donald Glaude, two of America’s big-room house heroes, will put the Guvernment’s generous booth to good use when they play side-by-side as part of their extensive InStereo tour. The two are long-time friends who came up together during the rave days in Seattle, later expanding their sounds and both moving to California. Their paths continue to cross professionally as both men are regularly booked at some of the world’s largest clubs and festivals, but this is a rare chance to hear them weave in and out of each other’s selections in a live 2x4 set, using two mixers and four turntables.
