Imperial abandonment

BY Shawn Micallef   June 25, 2008 13:06

Toronto usually has little in common with Detroit, but right now both cities have at least one abandoned skyscraper. Toronto’s rare example is the 1957 Imperial Oil Building on St. Clair west of Yonge Street. Imperial moved their headquarters to Calgary in 2005 and, though the building is empty, passersby can still see York Wilson’s massive mural The Story of Oil in the lobby. Originally a contender in the New City Hall design competition in the early 1950s, this building was designed to double as a hospital in the event of a nuclear attack.
