TJ Dawe’s title as the “Fringe God” preceded him as he performed to a sold-out house on opening night. Dawe’s 90-minute monologue did justice to his reputation as he strategically told one short and seemingly unrelated story after another, subtly revealing their connections along the way, and ultimately tying them all together in an insightful and thought-provoking package. Dawe punctuates the story of his own artistic development with stories of his “totem figures,” or those who have influenced his life. He speaks about his father, Jesus, Luke Skywalker and various writers and performers who are all what Dawe describes as “outsiders among outsiders.” But, most importantly, his performance achieves one of art’s most admirable functions: it inspires spectators to examine their own lives and seek their own truths.
