MY!GAY!HUSBAND! @ GNARLY
With The Machetes (live), DJs Cosmo Baker, Dougie Boom. Fri, July 18. Sneaky Dee’s, 431 College. $5 before 11pm.
Take Dmoney’s billing of Gnarly as a party of “angry rock” and “angry rap” with a big grain of salt, because it doesn’t get much happier and more humorous than the music mixed and mashed by Vancouver’s My!Gay!Husband!. These DJ/producers are essentially the West coast representatives of Canada’s thriving electro-party-rap scene, often appearing on bills with peeps like Ottawa’s Jokers of the Scene and our own Thunderheist. They’ve built a rep through their floor-filling edits and remixes of artists like Feist, Dizzee Rascal, The Streets, Le Tigre and Basement Jaxx so expect My!Gay!Husband! to come loaded with exclusive goods.

KATE SIMKO @ PAWNSHOP
With Alicia Hush, Jap_. Fri, July 18. TOI Bar, 577A College. $5.
Continuing to build the warm vibe at their weekly minimal affair Pawnshop, the women of Hushlamb join forces with the men of Tempo to present a special appearance by Chicago-based musician, producer and DJ Kate Simko. A classically trained pianist with a degree in electronic music composition, Simko is known for releasing melodic, soulful and funky left-field house and techno on labels including Spectral Sound, Kupei Musika and Traum. She’s performed at prestigious fests including Mutek and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, has been praised by the likes of XLR8R and URB magazines and will create a hybrid DJ/PA set here.

FELIX & GANI @ SUNNYSIDE
With DJs Paul E. Lopes, Mike Tull, Richard Brooks, Dirty Dale, Ali Black. Sun, July 20. Sunnyside Pavilion, 1755 Lakeshore W. $10 before 6pm, $15 after.
The boys of B9, Brooks and milk. know how to make summertime in this city all the more magical. This trio of promo crews have the historic Sunnyside Pavilion on lockdown for a series of parties in the venue’s lovely outdoor courtyard. Their Canada Day kickoff drew more than a thousand revellers and this afternoon-through-early-evening (4-11pm) event offers a supreme lineup of local DJs who’ll blend sunshine-y house, funk, disco and more. Hit the beach, then get your groove on.

THE BLACK GHOSTS

With A.D/D. Wed, July 23. Wrongbar, 1279 Queen W. $10 from Rotate This, Play De Record, Soundscapes, Ticketweb.ca.
London-based dance-rock duo The Black Ghosts are poised to be huge. Vocalist Simon Lord (formerly of the band Simian, now known as Simian Mobile Disco) and programmer/musician Theo Keating (a.k.a. DJ Touche of Wiseguys) are enormously talented songwriters who create modern-day anthems. We had an early taste through singles like “Anyway You Choose to Give It”  but The Black Ghosts come extra-strong with their self-titled debut album. Running the gamut from dark disco to pure pop, their full-length finds the duo eschewing distortion in favour of discernible hooks and vocals. This live show is one of only a handful happening in North America.
