On Disc

DJ NaNa

BY Nick Flanagan   August 06, 2008 16:08

The third volume detailing the contents of DJ NaNa’s brain definitely has its moments. NaNa’s ability to produce and flip samples is audible from the first track onwards and, though the moody sounds he creates aren’t dancefloor-friendly, they easily provoke an agreeable head-nod or two. His introduction describes the need to create new genres of music and, in songs like “33moke” and “Sound Is the Weapon,” you can hear NaNa’s attempts to make hip-hop, ambient beats and a variety of other styles evolve. Because he relies on various MCs to provide vocals for his tracks, there’s diversity throughout the 19 songs, for better and for worse. With that many songs, it’s a bit too much to digest, but most don’t overstay their welcome and the album is buoyed by its inspired, crafted feel.
