Breaks aficionados won’t want to miss this. Celebrating 15 years of DJing and eight years of running Pure Phunk productions, Toronto’s D-Monic will mix his last local DJ set of 2008 in the Skyy Cinema Room. In his time, D-Monic has brought breaks sets to raves and intimate spaces alike, and produced events featuring the likes of Krafty Kuts and Freddy Fresh. UK friend Atomic Hooligan joins him here while the main room will be rocked by Chicago duo The Beat Freakers, New York’s DJ Fame and T.O.’s Tightknit DJ crew.
EQUINOX @ LEGACY
With DJs Gremlinz, Frankie Gunns, Prime, Rumbleton, MC JD. Fri, Aug 15. El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Av. $10 before 11:30pm, $15 after.
You know when three long-time contributors to Toronto’s jungle and drum ‘n’ bass community join forces to form a new production company, they’re going to be serious about it. When those people — Prime, Frankie Gunns and Gremlinz — dub their enterprise Legacy, they’d better be. Aiming to put the breakbeats and inventiveness back into d’n’b parties, Legacy launches with the Toronto debut of British producer Equinox. Making music since he was 15, the open-eared Equinox creates rhythmic d’n’b that runs from smooth and melodic to pure rough stuff. His releases on labels including Metalheadz, Planet Mu, Bassbin, Inperspective and his own Scientific Wax are indeed celestial.
JAMES MURPHY AND PAT MAHONEY @ WRONGBAR
With DJs Mikey Apples, Nasty Nav. Sat, Aug 16. 1279 Queen W. $15 advance tickets at Play De Record, Rotate This, Wantickets.com.
LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Pat Mahoney are indie/punk guys with a deep love of true-school disco. This was clear from the duo’s fantastic Fabriclive.36 mix-CD, a collection of disco gems past and present. They’ve built that passion into Special Disco Version, an NYC club event that they also take on the road. When Mahoney brought a sweaty, edition here in June, many were left clamouring to get in. Two words: advance tickets.
STACEY PULLEN @ RADIO SKOOL
With Kenny Glasgow vs Greg Gow, Jonny White vs Nitin. Sat, Aug 16. Footwork, 425 Adelaide W. $20.
Footwork continues its solid summer programming with this Toronto edition of Stacey Pullen’s Radio Skool party. Pullen, for those not familiar with his work, is a Detroit native influenced by jazz, Motown, African rhythms and the techno birthed by citymates Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Also known as Kosmic Messenger, Pullen has been releasing highly creative electronics since the early ‘90s. His Radio Skool monthly is devoted to the music, spirit and ongoing influence of the Motor City.
BAJOFONDO (TANGO CLUB) @ SMALL WORLD
With DJ Medicineman. Sun, Aug 17. The Mod Club, 722 College. $30 advance tickets at Soundscapes, Smallworldmusic.com.
Ever since I heard French/Argentinian band The Gotan Project in ‘00, I’ve loved the merger of tango and electronics. Other outfits have since experimented with the combo, but none quite so beautifully as Bajofondo. Led by native Argentinian Gustavo Santolalla — a California-based composer who won Oscars for his scores for Brokeback Mountain and Babel — Bajofondo released their sample- and programming-heavy debut in 2002 and have since expanded into an eight-piece band. Bajofondo’s new release, Mar Dulce, combines tango with dub, hip-hop, milonga, rock and house and is utterly infectious. This Small World appearance marks their Canadian debut.
