From one of Quebec’s most promising filmmakers comes the compelling and ultimately devastating story of a new mother who comes apart at the seams. Elisabeth (Suzie LeBlanc) and Pierre (Patrick Goyette) are Montrealers spending the summer at Pierre’s family cottage with their infant son. Elisabeth’s competitive relationship with Pierre’s mother, the social isolation and various other pressures exacerbate a pronounced case of post-partum depression. The austere visual aesthetic and overall mood of emotional glaciation suggest that director Rodrigue Jean knows his Haneke through and through, but Lost Song is too vivid and powerful to come off as an exercise in art-house misery making.
