The Game

BY Del F. Cowie   August 27, 2008 14:08

Not content with merely earnestly rapping about everyone else, The Game has attempted to kick it up a couple of notches with some ill-conceived moves on his third and reputedly final outing. By enlisting many of the artists he obsessively refers to, The Game renders his delusionary claim for top MC status moot as his gruff and clunky delivery is consistently outshined. On “Never Say Can Goodbye,” he even audaciously rhymes from the perspective of fallen hip-hop icons Tupac, Notorious B.I.G. and Eazy E — but it’s a colossal faceplant. While Kanye West (supplanting Dr. Dre as The Game’s favourite rhyme reference) and others do contribute some heaters, the undeniable sonic heft of the The Game’s  first two efforts is lacking, leaving nowhere for the West Coast MC’s significant yet often curiously endearing lyrical deficiencies to hide.
