Liberty Village is one of Toronto’s greatest success stories. Adaptive reuse of great old buildings like the Carpet Factory (into offices for creative firms) and the Irwin Toy building (into residences) has turned this into one of Toronto’s most interesting neighbourhoods. However, that a Dominion — recently renamed Metro — was allowed to build a big-box supermarket here, complete with expansive parking lot, is one of the great crimes against Toronto’s urban fabric and undermines adjacent successes. Vibrant neighbourhoods require supermarkets but they should fit into their surroundings. On the plus side, the Metro is built so cheaply it could easily disappear.
