Based on a novel by Robert B. Parker, Ed Harris’ second directorial effort is a western through and through. There’s nothing fashionably reflexive or revisionist about this well-told tale of two veteran gunmen for hire — played with great ease and grace by Harris and Mortensen — whose latest assignment to clean up a town is complicated by a memorably sneaky villain (Jeremy Irons) and a surprisingly crafty dame (Renee Zellweger). The unhurried pace and old-fashioned sense of decorum allow the richness of the storytelling and performances to shine through. In other words, it’s the rare movie my dad and I will agree on.
