Who: D.B. Johnson, 38, owner of The Tree House Furniture Company (for information on purchasing Johnson’s one-off pieces call 416-993-7063); Dara Jaukovic, 42, co-owner of Mind the Body Pilates Studio; Jaukovic’s daughter Yumi, 7; dog Lulu, 7, cats Rex and Iggy, both 10.
What: Two-bedroom walk-up above storefront.

How long: Three years.
Favourite feature: The backyard playhouse that Johnson built for Yumi and the deck area outside. “As I get older I play more and more,” he says.
The story: D.B. Johnson’s handmade furniture sits among hoards of antiques in the spacious Aladdin’s cave–like living space at the heart of their home. Johnson says that the reclaimed wood he uses provides a “rawness and simplicity that runs throughout my work.” Johnson and Jaukovic have invested in unusual pieces with a sense of history, from the Ming Dynasty chairs to a 1930s hand-painted bass drum (both at left). It doesn’t hurt that their favourite shop, Gallery & Innovations (821 Queen W., 416-703-7753), is just across the street, allowing the couple to window-shop regularly without even leaving their home.
