A proper spring clean is a heavy-duty chore we often try to avoid. But maybe we just need a reward system? After all, dusting and vacuuming can clear room for new pieces that will spruce up your space and, best of all, keep you in the green.

Quick green tips
Go natural
A quick look in the kitchen cupboard can provide handy natural alternatives to chemical cleaners. White vinegar mixed with water can wash windows, countertops and tile. Baking soda is also a reliable all-purpose cleaner when mixed with water. You can even make furniture polish from vinegar and olive oil.

If you’re on the hunt for commercially made natural products, we suggest Grassroots (408 Bloor W., 416-944-1993, www.grassrootsstore.com) for its non-toxic and biodegradable cleaners or Universal Stone’s eco-friendly cleaning and polishing powder that’s available at Jolanta Interiors (2368 Bloor W., 416-762-9638).

Green-thumb it
Easy-to-care-for houseplants like English ivy and peace lilies take in carbon dioxide and create more oxygen. They’re also better at brightening your space than their plastic counterparts.

Donate or repurpose your clutter
Whether you sell your unwanted items on eBay or donate them to a local shelter, there’s always someone that could use your extra stuff. Feeling creative? Rework your trash into new interior design pieces or works of art.
