Before reconstructed costume designer Jessica Nicholson debuted her first collection at last month’s Toronto Alternative Fashion Week (FAT), she was feeling adrift. The LeSalle College graduate in costume design was frustrated with freelance styling (she’s worked with everyone from local Izzy Calmieri to the New York–based Ferrell Child). “I had an existential crisis,” she reflects. “I was thinking about moving to Africa and doing some meaningful social work.” Nicholson drew on this impulse to create a collection inspired by the turn-of-the-millennium anti-globalization protests in Seattle and Quebec City, using recycled reconstructed materials to comment upon the need for innovative but sustainability-conscious wear. While she’s not quitting her stylist gigs, Nicholson already has plans for a second collection.
