WHO: Susan Scott, 36, hairstylist; Andy Jekabsons, 36, camera operator for feature films; Ruben and Nina, cats.
WHAT: A two-bedroom loft in a low-rise building near Queen and Bathurst.
HOW LONG: About two and a half years.
THE STORY: After renting a chair in salons across the city for 14 years, hairstylist Susan Scott is delighted to be working from home. “It helps me set my own vibe,” she says. The vibe in question is decidedly old-school, with exposed brick walls, wood beams, hardwood floors and a tonne of vintage salon equipment.
Behind the white vanity she nabbed at
Châtelet (717 Queen W., 416-603-2278) hangs a tapestry made from Victorian-style printed fabric from
MacFab (600 Queen W., 416-922-6000). She got her ’60s helmet-style hairdryer for just $20 at a Roncesvalles antiques store, because it was broken and the shopkeeper wanted to be rid of it. “We just thought it would make a cool chair,” she says, “but Andy took it apart and rewired it, and now it works!” The final touch is a red runner leading up to the door. “I want people to feel like they’re walking the red carpet when they leave me,” Scott says.
