What do Deerhoof, the city of Toronto, the Black Panther Party, a Brooklyn visual artist and Jean-Luc Godard
have in common? Apparently, the Toronto International Film Festival. A
TIFF-sponsored video-art-installation-cum-rock-concert at Yonge and
Dundas Square orchestrated by Adam Pendleton has brought the San Francisco avant-indie darlings and French New Wave pioneer together for something called, simply, BAND. ...more
With one day left in the the film festival, it’s time to reflect on the

When TIFF attendees complain about exhaustion, dehydration and the
weight of their goody bags, it’s not coming from back-to-back
screenings. Partying is the real sport of TIFFing, and while EYE
WEEKLY’s staff revelers aren’t really the kind of high-gear socialites
that get off on the after-after-after-party starfucking, we hit up a few TIFF
fiestas and lived to tell about it. Here's our soiree scorecard.

Considering that my life tends to function more like a Todd
Solondz film and less like a Hollywood rom-com, no one was more surprised than
me to find myself at a glass mansion on the Bridle Path petting a subdued goat.
Caged animals brayed quietly in front of the door for the Men Who Stare at
Goats soiree, sponsored by (who else) Vitamin Water. ...more
Between the Jennifer Connelly insult, the Megan Fox vs. Hitler slag-fest, The Road getting punted around the release schedule like an unwanted stepchild and Lars Von Trier hating us, this is shaping up to be the Nastiest TIFF Ever.

Sure, the city is swarming with celebs right now, but for certain British-pop fans, no star in town is bigger than Andy Rourke. The former bassist for '80s indie legends The Smiths has assumed a new career: party DJ. We spoke to Rourke last night before his gig at the Drake Hotel's opening-night TIFF soiree about his new vocation, his recent move to Brooklyn and life in the shadow of one of the most influential
pop bands of our time.

Leave it to TIFF to draw one of the most influential women in the world to Toronto: Oprah Winfrey. However, it’s times like these that we almost forget the more insidious
activities of The O; namely, serving as a sort of overlord for a
dangerous collective of celebrity science pushers whose media-savvy
sway is leading scores of dedicated viewers on personal-health witch
hunts based on medical advice that’s about as sound as George W. Bush’s
reasons for invading Iraq. ...more
Aside from the 4pm “get the hell out” volume-kill at this afternoon’s
press conference for the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival,
there appears to be no evidence to suggest that this city is gearing up
for its first recession-era TIFF. In fact, with some 600 submissions to
the Short Cuts Canada program and 200 Canadian feature submissions, the
industry — as one of the festival’s programmers said during the
announcements at the Fairmont Royal York’s Imperial Room — is clearly
thriving. ...more
Victorian England looks to be all the rage at TIFF this year. The mental image of Transformers starlet Megan Fox feasting upon the living caused an outbreak of woodies among genre-movie fans when the Toronto International Film Festival
announced Midnight Madness’ opening selection on Tuesday, along with
the contents of Wavelengths and much of TIFF’s documentary slate. (The
fest runs Sept. 10-19.) ...more
