This documentary study of whaling protesters presents its subjects’ lives in such excruciating detail that the film manages the difficult task of making pirate flag– and smoke bomb–packing rebels seem boring. With incredible footage of the animal rights activists crashing their ship into Japanese whaling vessels and throwing acid at offending boats, the film is hardly devoid of action. But most of the running time is devoted to the daily minutia of the key figures involved. This certainly makes for a few interesting character studies, but ultimately prevents the movie from being as provocative as it could have been.
