There is a necessary component to any music blogger worth their MP3s and that component is love. Today at Totally Wired, we rep Soundscapes clerk/National Post videographer Colin Medley and his reverent, completely excellent blog, Morning Noon Night. An occasional CBC Radio 3 correspondent, Medley captures footage of local indie bands doing what they do best: playing the shit out of great music.

A blogger since 2006, Medley photographs the intimate finger-plucking moments of live appearances. Peep, for instance, this stirring performance of André Ethier with local power-pop outfit Steamboat during their July residency at the Dakota Tavern, a terrific combination of soul and sass (though I maintain Steamboat sound like the Muppet Band).

Personifying the giddiness of a music geek for life (a 2008 post from the Sackville SappyFest exclaims, “There’s Chad VanGaalen drinking a smoothie!”), Medley captures Canadian music the way it should be seen: through the wide-eyes of someone who really cares. Loving music is a two-way street. Sometimes the only way to pay homage to your idols is to display that enthusiasm for their music better than the bands themselves.

With Colin in mind, here is a “medley” of EYE WEEKLY’s favourite live performances:

1. I had no idea that Guelph’s best music venue was a thrift store! Medley captures The Family Thrift Store’s last concert.

2. The Magic are Toronto’s best kept secret — a multi-piece disco band with a female singer that sounds like Stevie Nicks.

3. Attack In Black can’t help but make us “turn.” Here they are at a secret show at the Dakota.

4. Ex-Eric's Trip members Rick White and Julie Doiron cover Neil Young’s “Look Out For My Love.” We say, OMFG.
